Appellation Area :
The Faugeres appellation covers 2000 hectares shared among 2 coopératives and 41 private wine producers. The appellation area is located on 7 villages : Faugères, Cabrerolles, Caussignojouls,
Laurens, Autignac, Roquessels et Fos. All the vineyard has a soil of shist.
Historical :
1948 : appellation area has been delimited.
1955 : approval to VDQS (Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure) for the red wines and the rosé wines.
1982 : approval to AOC (Appellation d'Origine Controlée) for the red and rosés wines.
2000 : the production of "eau de vie de Faugères" has started again.
2004 : approval to AOC for the white wines.
Grape varieties :
For the red and rosé wines
CARIGNAN 40 % maxi
CINSAULT 20 % maxi
GRENACHE 20 % mini
SYRAH ou MOURVEDRE 15 % with at least 5 % of Mourvedre
Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre must represent at least 50% of total vineyard in 2005.
Harvest of young vineyard at the 4th leaf.
For the white wine
Main grape varieties :
GRENACHE BLANC 70 % maxi
MARSANNE 70 % maxi
ROUSSANNE 70 % maxi and 30% mini
VERMENTINO (ROLLE) 70 % maxi
Secondary grape varieties :
10% maxi for one or many of the following grapes :
- CLAIRETTE
- BOURBOULENC
- MACABEU
- CARIGNAN BLANC
The white wines have to be blended with at least 2 different grapes where Roussanne is mandatory.
Tasting :
The Rosé Wines
The Cinsault variety brings good and floral taste (90 % of Cinsault are used to ellaborate rosé wines).
The Grenache variety brings roundness.
The Syrah brings fruity taste and a nice colour.
The Mourvèdre variety is excellent against oxidation.
The Red Wines
The Grenache variety brings alcohol and fruity/spicy tastes.
The Carignan variety is picked off from the bunch or not in order to reduce the astringency.
The Syrah variety brings floral (violet) or fruity (red fruits) tastes.
The Mourvèdre variety gives animal taste and the tannins are well rounded.
